materna exclusiva.
Objective: To determine the association between early maternal-newborn contact and exclusive breastfeeding among postpartum women attended at the Regional Hospital of Ica in 2023. Methodological Strategy: This is an observational, analytical association study conducted on a population of 561 newborns. From this population, 74 cases (children who had early contact with their mothers) and 74 controls (children who did not have early contact with their mothers) were selected. The chi-square test of association was used, along with the calculation of the p- value for statistical significance. Data were processed using the statistical software SPSS v29, and the results are presented with a 95% confidence level. Results: 81.1% of mothers reported that they provided exclusive breastfeeding to their infants. Among these mothers, 19.6% were under 20 years old, 59.5% were between 20 and 34 years old, and 20.9% were 35 years or older. 15.5% of the mothers were single, 34.5% were married, 18.9% were in stable relationships, and 31.1% reported other marital statuses. Regarding education, 18.9% had completed primary education, 44.6% had secondary education, and 36.5% had higher education. 80.4% had six or more prenatal check-ups. The average birth weight was 3463.98 grams (95% CI: 3404.7 - 3523.2) and the average birth length was 49.93 centimeters (95% CI: 49.7 - 50.1). 48% were male, 8.1% had an Apgar score of 7 at 5 minutes after birth, 31.8% had an Apgar score of 8, 50.7% had an Apgar score of 9, and 9.5% had an Apgar score of 10. Among those who had early contact, 91.9% of the infants received exclusive breastfeeding, whereas 70.3% of those who did not have early contact received exclusive breastfeeding, with a p-value of 0.001 and RR = 4.79 (95% CI: 1.8 - 12.7). Conclusion: Early contact between the newborn and the mother increases the likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding.
